The Art of Smudging
The Art of Smudging

I’m always reminded (either through personal experiences or through the observance of others) of the importance of staying energetically cleansed.

I’m always reminded (either through personal experiences or through the observance of others) of the importance of staying energetically cleansed. It is just as important as staying physically clean and hygienic. No matter what your religious or spiritual beliefs are (or are not) I would encourage everyone to make a habit of energetically cleaning themselves and their home on a regular basis, through smudging.

Smudging can be either an elaborate ceremony, ritual or a simple daily practice. It can be as simple or as complicated as you wish. There are however some fundamental basics than even a simple and quick practice needs to follow:

Tools: smudging heat proof dish or pan, rice or sand in the bottom to absorb heat. White sage leaves or smudging stick.

Tips: make sure you have a widow open in the room you are going to use. Make sure to hold your white sage leaf or smudge stick over the pan properly to catch any ash. Be careful not to burn your clothes or hair!

It is also best to have someone to do this with. They smudge you then you smudge them. If that’s not possible, pretend (use your creative imagination) you are standing in front of yourself. Smudge your imaginary selfs back, step through the smudge smoke. Smudge your front, step through the smudge smoke again. Then under left arm then under right arm. See full steps below.

It is perfectly safe to smudge children as well of all ages. Just be mindful that they don’t grab the hot smudge stick!

Say a prayer that you feel aligns you with your higher self (soul mantra prayer is a suggestion). Light a large white sage leaf or your smudge stick until it smoulders and starts to slow burn. Hold over the pan/dish to catch any hot ash.

Start at the persons back just above the top of their head. In a zig zag downward motion (in and out from the body) work your way down from just above the top of their head to their feet.

Repeat at the front of their body.

Hold arms out and starting with left arm hold smudge stick (with pan under it) under and just below left arm pit and pull out to finger tips.

Repeat just under right arm pit to tips of right fingers.

Then hold smudge stick and pan just out from the middle/centre of their back and hold for a few seconds. If sage smoke runs up the back a clear white color you have cleared them properly.

If smoke runs a grey/black color it means they are not fully clear. Repeat all above steps or repeat the whole smudging process the next day. Sometimes when something energetic needs to be expelled it needs a few hours to leave your system properly. Energetic cleansing isn’t always instant nor is it meant to be sometimes.

Give thanks for the mini clearing received and gently grind out your sage leaf for smudge stick.

Leave your tools in a dry safe place to use again next week.

I really do recommend making simple self smudging a once a week practice no matter what you do or don’t do for a living.

We do not only pick up energies from other people but we can and do become imprinted with what we read, hear and see. To make sure your mind and emotions are authentically your own, smudging is one way to safely and healthy release what is not yours or even what is yours and not serving you. There are a wide range of many benefits with properly smudging yourself (once a week) and home (once a month). I will post soon about the basics of smudging your house.
